FOR THE PARENTS

Support

Hearing that your daughter or your son’s girlfriend is pregnant can create
overwhelming feelings of sadness, anger, guilt, fear, loss, and so much
more.

“When my daughter first told me she was pregnant, my world shattered.
I cried all the time and I couldn’t talk to anyone about it. I thought
her life was ruined.”

The Kara Social Worker supports families through this time of crisis.
Individual and family support is provided, as well as community referrals
when needed. Students in the Calgary Catholic School District continue
to attend school as much as possible during pregnancy and after. The Kara
Program offers extensive, comprehensive support (see For
Students
). The Kara Social Worker and the Kara Nurse also provide
support to pregnant and parenting young adults (up to age 24) who are
no longer in school (see Outreach Clients).

Kara Social Worker

Pregnant and parenting students and young adults face unique challenges,
whether in continuing their education or in pursuing and maintaining employment.
The Kara Social Worker works with these young clients as well as their
families in addressing issues such as:

  • basic needs such as food, clothing, and housing
  • child care
  • maintenance (child support)
  • financial assistance
  • family support
  • parenting skills
  • referrals to community resources
  • continuous, year-round support
  • outreach services for clients who are no longer in school for pregnant
and parenting young adults (up to age 24)

Testimonials

“Our family has been very happy with our experience of the Kara
Program. The Kara Social Worker has been extremely supportive these past
two years and we appreciate all of her time and effort. Our daughter is
in school today because of that support.”

“The Kara Program was instrumental in providing support for my
daughter upon returning to school while pregnant and through the adoption
process. I found there was encouragement to develop as an individual and
grow/mature from this experience. The opportunity to meet with other Kara
students helped her understand she was not alone…”

“As a grandmother, I am very thankful my daughter had the support
she needed at the moment she needed it most. Thank you for being there.”

“The support my son received was tremendous. It’s nice to know
that there is support for young fathers as well as for the mothers.”

“Thanks for helping us sort through our three-generational issues.
Your help came at the right time.”
