The Kara Program

The Kara Program is a Calgary Catholic School District educational program
to help young pregnant and parenting teens (male and female) remain in
school and complete their high school program during pregnancy and after
the birth of their children. The Kara Community Advisory Association (KCAA)
provides for the non-educational needs of Kara students, primarily through
the Kara Social Worker. Funding for the Kara Social Worker position is
made available through generous donations from Catholic Charities and
other Friends of Kara.

The Calgary Catholic School District, together with the KCAA and Alberta
Health Services, provides a number of services to pregnant and parenting
students, including:

  • a resource centre and Kara Teacher/Counsellor for pregnant and parenting
    students
  • client-centered services at each Calgary Catholic School District
    School
  • credit high school courses in parenting, child development, etc.
  • academic planning and support
  • liaison to community services
  • counselling & pastoral care
  • parenting skills
  • year-round support
  • social worker support (see below)
  • nursing services from the Alberta Health Services Kara Nurse, including
    health counselling, referrals to community health resources (prenatal
    classes, dental, etc.), pregnancy and parenting support and counselling,
    etc.

The Kara Team includes:

  • The Calgary Catholic School District Kara Teacher/Counsellor
  • The Kara Community Advisory Association Kara Social Worker
  • The Alberta Health Services Kara Nurse
  • The Calgary Catholic School District Kara Consultant
  • The Calgary Catholic School District Supervisor, Religious Education
    & Family Life

Social Worker Support

The Kara Social Worker works collaboratively with the Kara Team, the
Kara students, and their families in overcoming the non-educational barriers
to completing their education. The Kara Social Worker provides information,
support, and community liaison with regards to:

  • finances and budgeting
  • food, clothing, and housing
  • child care
  • maintenance (child support)
  • family counselling
  • parenting skills
  • referrals to community resources
  • continuous, year-round support
  • outreach services

Bursary Information

The KCAA provides Educational Bursaries for deserving Kara students who
wish to pursue post-secondary studies. Further information and application
forms are available through the Kara Teacher/Counsellor.

Seminars/Retreats

The KCAA provides funding for Kara retreats for all Kara students and
Outreach clients. The KCAA also provides funding for annual Infant and
Child CPR & First Aid training for all Kara students. More information
about these and other KCAA-sponsored events is available from the Kara
Teacher/Counsellor and the Kara Social Worker.

The KCAA provides funding for retreats, infant CPR training days, and
